In my last entry, I said I thought the book might be finished. Well, Alyssa (the project manager) responded by asking if it felt good to be finished. So I guess I really am done. Of course, Monday, I've got to start on the instructor's material. But the book itself is done! Yesterday, Alyssa also sent me the artwork for the cover. Here's what the front cover looks like. I also put a copy of the front cover on my web page. It wasn't quite what I originally had in mind, but then I'm no graphic artist. So after the initial "violation of expectations" I looked at it on its own terms. And I like it. I see the boxes as all the operating systems I talk about and the open box represents the ones I dig deeply into. Plus (as suggested by my wife) the red in the open box is rather fitting with Inferno being one of the in-depth OSs. So that's cool. I just can't wait until I can hold a real copy in my hand. I'm still imagining that scene at the end of Back to the Future where George opens the box with his new book.
Not much else this weekend. My wife and daughter are at one of my daughter's dance competitions, so I'm hanging by myself. I've gotten some done. I've started on the process of closing the pool for the year. I've washed and waxed the Miata. I've sorted through some Inferno stuff for my students. I'm watching Notre Dame play Michigan State. They're doing much better than in the first 3 games of the season. A little later, I need to try to fix a drip in the kitchen sink faucet. Tonight, I'll try to do some more Inferno stuff. That sort of thing is pretty much what my non-family personal time is like.

I'm digging the cover! I too gathered the same OS representation of the boxes & naturally drew out Inferno as the red box, thinking it was intentionally representative, but I guess in the publishing world, they go with what "pops" rather than what represents the material. More later...have to get busy on this windows hosting!

I don't honestly know what the artist had in mind. It's entirely possible that they intended just what we're seeing. On the other hand it could be something different... They did tell me that there's some talk that they might submit it in some competitions.
